HIKING in Hawaii can be dangerous... the #1 Concern when Hiking in Hawaii: WATER
WATER
FLASH FLOODS are prevalent on Hiking trails along rivers (Hankapiai Falls; Hoopii Falls; Worst Kept Secret Falls)
Even on Sunny Days because it usually takes a Day or Two for rainfall to make it's way down the rivers and streams
ALWAYS check the weather report before going Hiking in Hawaii, especially along waterways.
HUMIDITY of Hawaii will dehydrate you while sitting in the shade; dehydration is exemplified when exercising in Hawaii.
RAIN will dampen anyone's Hiking experience in Hawaii; don't let the Rain Gods get you down... Be Prepared!
BRING:
Emergency Device: Flashlight/Compass/Whistle -- especially for areas with NO reception (Waimea Canyon / Kalalau)
WATER!! Twice as much as you normally would drink on a Hike in dryer climates; Water Filter for the 11-mile Kalalau Hike
Protein Snacks
**Bananas are a great source of Potassium; it helps retain water... great for Exercising in the Hot Humidity of Hawaii
Appropriate shoes for hiking on muddy trails
Sunscreen
Bug Spray
Hat - especially Bald heads; protect yourself from the sun! OR at least a Visor to shade your Face
Sunglasses
Disposable Rain Pancho ; if it rains, wear it over your clothes to prevent your clothing from getting wet, cold and heavy.

Kalalau Trail / Hanakapiai Falls RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED:
Hanakapiai Falls First 2-miles of the Kalalau Trail will take you to Hanakapiai Beach
Turn inland for another 2-miles trek to Hanakapiai Falls.
As of January 2022 Park Admission Only $5pp - Best for those who have a ride for Drop Off

Hoopii Falls Private Property in Residential area; if you choose to trespass...
Do not leave valuables in the car. I recommend catching a ride share or taxi;
Make a Deal with the Driver to come back and get you.
Sleeping Giant (Mt. Nonou) (3) Trailheads:
East Haleilio Rd. Hardest because of a steep face close to the top
West Lokelani Rd. Shortest; joins up with the East Trail, close to the top
South Hwy. 580 Longest; joins up with the West Trail, then joins the East
Kokee State Park / Waimea Canyon There are many hiking trails in this State Park
Please research this information and plan in advance
Parking Fees
RECOMMENDATIONS: GO EARLY-MID Morning
Wear appropriate shoes; it's usually very muddy
BRING: Light Jacket/Sweater -- it can get down in the 30s during Hawaii's Winter season

For your Safety, Exit all trails before Sunset.
NOTE: 'AWA'AWAPUHI Trail is very popular because of the scenic views
Maha'ulepu Sea Cliffs – access to trailhead located @ East end of Shipwreck's Beach (fronting the Grand Hyatt Kauai).
A 2-mile trail which takes you along the sea cliffs overlooking the ocean. It's Hot and Windy; prepare accordingly... LOTS of Water!!
